Listen First

The cosmos reverberates with the vibration of insidious noise.  How can we hear the voice of our Lord, our chief navigator on life’s voyage?

Our sense of hearing is dulled as our mobile-device fingertips try to multi-task between twitter and texting, while we watch TV and when we are absorbed in reading.

We tune out familiar voices with predictable messages. Inevitably we are “hurtfully” not listening to our families, friends, co-workers and teachers.  Dangerously, we may not be hearing the four-alarm fire truck closing in on us or the voice of our Lord directing us to safety.  From The Pursuit of God, A.W. Tozer

Lord, teach me to listen. The times are noisy and my ears are weary with the thousand raucous sounds which continuously assault them. Give me the spirit of the boy Samuel when he said "Speak, for thy servant heareth." Let me hear Thee speaking in my heart. Let me get used to the sound of Thy voice, that its tones may be familiar when the sounds of earth die away and the only sound will be the music of Thy speaking voice.

On Speaking:

How powerful is the spoken word!  We speak without listening and without restraint. The Word cautions us against the release of capricious words.  The spirit realm hears our words as commands, as mandates. The spoken word cannot be recalled. As angry words fly from our mouths others are injured - Proverbs 18:14 The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?

Oh, that we would practice Proverbs 31:26 – She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

Think about it –
A charming person is often perceived as “one who listens more, talks less, and is kind.”
