Achieving the Victories in Our Lives

By Thomas Denegre

Reading from Genesis 3

Spies are the most dangerous people as they can possess the secret knowledge to win wars or destroy nations. Just as equal, God warns us in the Book of Hosea, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)   Jesus also warned us that “the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I have come to bring life, and bring it abundantly.” (John 10:10) Our Lord so much desires us to have an abundant life because “the truth (Jesus) will set you free,” (John 8:32) from oppression, self-imprisonment, despair, falsehoods, and self-destruction.

Are you ready to accept knowledge to save you, and give you the victories in life you desire?

Considering this hidden knowledge, I learned the fall of man was due to his lack of knowledge in his strengths, his weaknesses, and the wiles of the enemy.  As a former U.S. Navy Commander and pilot we were required to study “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu.  Written over 2,000 years ago, the military strategist stated, If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” So, lets begin by learning more about our own self to enable more victories in our life.

In the beginning God said, said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness.” (Gen 1:26). We know God has three attributes Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.  In the same way, man was given three attributes; spirit, soul, and body.  For the Apostle Paul states, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thes 5:23)

The spirit, soul, and body of man contain their own attributes. One must understand how these attributes work together along with their given priorities; otherwise we are doomed.  When God breathe life into Adam, he gave him spirit and life. Man’s spirit is eternal (yes, we are eternal entities) and designed to be in life-union with God.  Our spirit has three attributes; communion, intuition, and conscience. In addition, our soul has three attributes; mind, will, and emotions.

When Adam walked with God, he was walking spirit-to-spirit with Him. Adam lived in a state of innocence whereby his spirit controlled his soul and body for he knew no shame when he was naked.  Then the fall of man occurred. “So, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate.” (Gen 3:6) Letting down their defenses, pride (self-centeredness) entered Adam and Eve which enabled their body and soul to dominate their spirit. They ran away from God as the death of their spiritual relationship with God brought fear and shame.  Sadly, they entered that lying business of political correctness by claiming to be victims and blaming someone else for their own responsibilities. Some things never change.

Today we are fortunate because we can have our sins forgiven when we run to the Lord with repentance and humility. Thankfully, our savior Jesus the Christ gave us this grace from Calvary.

Today’s world is no different, we see the enemy attacking our spirit, soul and body to severe our spiritual relationship with God.  If our spirit is not in life union with Jesus (John 15) then our lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6) will doom us to a sinners’ life. Here are just few ways the enemy can attack us.

·         Take this beauty cream and you’ll look ten years younger (vanity)
·         She is so much prettier than I am (envy)
·         I can’t take my eyes off that person at the gym (lust)
·         I make my decisions based on my conscious views and not by the Word of God (rebellion)
·         If they stand that way politically, then they must be evil (anger)
·         I want my pound of flesh.  I want my revenge. (unforgiveness)
·         By my title, (vice president, elite college graduate, doctor, software programmer) I am better than you (pride)
·         I trust my bank account not God (greed)
·         So, I weigh 300 pounds.  Food is my comfort (gluttony)
·         Hey, I deserve to live on welfare all my life. It’s not my fault. (sloth)

The natural order of life is for us to walk in life union with God and have His words live powerfully within our mind and spirit (John 15:7). By this manner, our spirit will control our soul which then controls our body and not vice versa. By living in the spirit, we can be assured of our victories through Jesus our Lord.

Paul the Apostle states this very well; “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. (Rom. 8:5-6)

“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Gal. 5:16) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Gal.5:22-25)

·         MIND - The mind a battlefield – 2 Cor 10:5; The vulnerabilities of a passive mind – 2 Cor 11:3; The way of deliverance – Col 3: 9; The laws of the mind - Rom 8:6
·         WILL - A believer’s will – Luke 22:42; Passivity and its dangers – 2 Tim 1:7; The believer’s mistake – Hosea 4:6; The path to freedom – John 8:32

The Seed of Life

It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.

Have you ever thought about what Adam looked like? Envision him.

Now think about the last baby you met. Did he or she look like the parents?

Probably so, at least in a broad sense. Boil it down and we all look the same - nose in the center of the face, two eyes above, a mouth below, legs at our waist and arms at our shoulders. We all act alike too. We eat, we sleep, we sin, we hate, we love.

The reality is universally observable: Produced life is remarkably similar to the producer(s). Fish produce fish, birds produce birds, and humans produce humans. There’s no mistaking one for the other.

So we understand how we are born in a natural sense, but how are people born in a spiritual sense?

Jesus says, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” (John 3:5-6

This Spirit that gives birth to our spirit is the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Therefore, just as we are like our parents (and by derivation Adam) in a physical sense, we are like Jesus Christ in a spiritual sense. Our spiritual lives reflect his character as defined in Galatians 5: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. And more than that, just as our natural bodies are mortal like Adam’s, our spiritual bodies are immortal like Christ’s!

“For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.” (1 Corinthians 15:22)

You are alive in a natural sense, but are you born again of the Spirit of Jesus Christ? And has this second birth into immortality changed the way you live your mortal life?

Fruit Insptector

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. -Galatians 5:22-26

My Father-In-Law used to own an orange grove. This was over 40 years ago, but he has shared stories of how he, and a crew of people, would have to go out into the grove and inspect the fruit. The grove was in Florida, so one of the things they had to be aware of was the temperature. If it got too cold, they would light tires on fire throughout the grove which would raise the temperature and keep the fruit safe.

We are called to be fruit inspectors too. We are to inspect the fruit in our own lives and make sure we are keeping with the Spirit. Our passage today says, "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." How can we know we are keeping in step with the Spirit?

Well, we need to inspect our fruit. Is the fruit we produce in our lives consistent with the fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 says,

"22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

If we can see the fruit of the Spirit at work in our lives then we know we are keeping in step with the Spirit, if not then we know we have some work to do.  One great way to make sure you are on a good path is to allow others to be fruit inspectors in your life.  They will see things that you may overlook.

It is always nice to have safe accountability, someone who knows us and loves us and wants the best for us and others around us.  We need someone we can trust to inspect the fruit we are producing, because as you know, one rotten apple can ruin the whole bunch.

The fruit of the Spirit

13 January
Scripture Reading
Read Galatians 5:16-26 and reflect on the passage.

I’m in a wide expanse of darkness. A light shines down. With every step, the light moves with me and provides sustenance necessary for the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control to bloom as flowers around me. Brilliant colors rise up from thistles threatening to ensnare, but too weak to overcome the power I possess in this light.

Sometimes I peek at shadows lurking in the darkness, and take a step out of the light to get a better look. It’s there that I’m burdened by the conflict of what the Spirit and my sinful nature desire. Afraid and lonely, I panic at what I might run into in the dark. By grace, I step back into the light’s embrace. The longer I spend here, the harder it is to see the shadows in the darkness, and the less I want to.

I used to view the fruits of the Spirit as a source of striving—I’m not worthy if I don’t possess and reflect them by my own efforts. Now I realize that they aren’t markers by which my faith is being graded, but gifts, stemming from the surrender of letting the Holy Spirit guide my life.

The expanse of darkness that once surrounded me dissipates into a distant memory, and the promise of light-sustained paradise is all I can see.

Questions
1.      Do you see the fruits of the Spirit as requirements, or gifts?
2.      How do you picture the Holy Spirit guiding you?

Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for joy that comes from walking in Your light, and the allowance to “carry out [our] good intentions,” freely and ungoverned. Amen.

Be Fruitful

Galatians 5:22 (MSG)
But what happens when we live God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people.

What are these gifts But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

When we consider the opposite of these gifts we are brought back to a time before we had a relationship with Jesus before we opened up our hearts and our lives to the goodness of God and His love. Those memories aren't so sweet. I never want to forget from where I came, but I never want to go back there either.

John 15:4 (MSG)
"Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can't bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can't bear fruit unless you are joined with me.

Abiding in God, sticking close to His side every moment is where I discover true life. My heart is more at peace when I love someone than when I feel contempt for them.  I experience joy even when there is trouble in my life. There is peace in knowing God is in control and I am not.

I am not trying to fool anyone into thinking this is easy...it is anything but. Cultivating these fruits in my daily living takes work.  There is a lot of pruning that needs to take place; the soil has to be worked up and weeds must be pulled.  Anyone who has a garden can understand the work involved to bring forth sweet and nourishing fruit.

Colossians 3:14  (MSG)
"And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it."
